ELA stands for English Language Arts. I fall victim in being one of those people who thought these standards were solely for reading, writing, grammar, spelling, etc. Now after learning more about them it has come to my attention that these standards expand beyond what I use to think. The ELA Standards actually incorporate technology! Crazy at first to think but yet so obvious. As technology is growing and expanding our use of them for listening, speaking, writing on them also expands. Because of the more demanding needs of technology use the more the standards have changed to involve technology. An example is the standards for Grade 1. LAFS.1.SL.1.2. is a standard for grade 1 students to be able to use technology to listen to a reading via cd, computer, audiobooks, etc and be able to recite back the main points, arguments, or what they learned from listening to the person speak through the technology source. I personally feel prepared in using and applying this standard to my future class because I rely a lot of listening for learning purposes. Often times I doze off when reading a book or article but when it is read aloud i am more aware and conscious of what is being said. This helps not only with learning but communicational practice when having to speak to others and know what they are talking about and why, to also be able to push aside fluff.
One of the CPALMs Educator ToolKit resources I would be using in my classroom is SC.1.N.1.4. "Ask "How do you know?". This is for grade-1 students in the subject of Science. I would be implementing this resource because it is all about the idea of arriving to a conclusion using your resources available. Whether this is past experiences, past learned knowledge, new material you just learned in a reading/book/ lecture. This resource helps show how one can raise or be asked a question and be able to not only answer it but explain their answer, hence the question "how do you know?". This is an important lesson not only when solving problems within science but also in other subjects and in life. By using past knowledge and gained experience you will be able to apply it more without necessarily applying the scientific method. How do I know it is going to rain? Well it is cloudy outside, the whether channel stated this morning there was a 60 percent change of rain today, etc.
Internet searching is a vital tool within not only our education system but for our society in general. As technology is ever growing and upgrading we are constantly faced with new questions, problems, interests. Having the internet at our disposal at all times is like having a scientist, whether reporter, chef, teacher, etc with us at all times. Whenever we have a question , example about what temperature our oven needs to be on when baking a pie, instead of going and finding a local baker and asking them we can just pull up the internet and ask google to find the answer in half the time. It is important for teachers to know how to internet search because a teacher is like any human being, they don't know everything as much as they have to act like it. By being able to Internet search better they can find research, pictures, answers to questions that can help display what is needing to be taught or answered in class. One of the skills this week that I will definently be applying more is the advanced search option within google. I once took a computer class where they taught you all about the tricks in google such as the minus sign or the plus, but with advantaged search it gets even more specific than that.
